Top 5 things to do in Symi
Greece is one of my favourite places to visit if you’re looking for a more low-key relaxing vacation. The people, the sun and the food is all so enjoyable.
Symi in particularly took my breath away. Its absolutely stunning here, every street and corner is beautiful. I would love to visit again and here are things you should do if you’re lucky enough to visit this small island. Here are the top 5 things to do in Symi.
Symi is a very small island so the only way to get here is jumping on the ferry from Rhodes. This takes around 50mins and is the perfect way to enjoy a breeze. on a hot day.

- Visit a Sponge Shop
- Have Lunch at Hotel Nireus
- Admire the Panormitis Monastery
- Visit the Symi War Memorial
- Relax on the Agios Georgios Dysalona Beach

1. Visit one of the many sponge shops
On arrival you’ll see a lot of shops selling sponges, so understandably is the most purchased souvenir on the island. Sponge diving used to be huge business here and divers would risks their lives for them.
This is a statue of Stathis Hatzis who was a well known sponge divers in Symi. He was well known for his incredible ability to hold his breathe for 4 minutes.
2. Have Lunch at Hotel Nireus
Whilst enjoying a stunning view at this sea front restaurant, tuck into their famous tiny shrimp dishes and fresh fish. We had a pleasant experience here and managed to temporarily escape with the cooling sea breeze.
With our left over bread we were able to fed and fish we could sea in the extremely clear water.
3. Admire the Panormitis Monastery
South of the Island on the Panormitis coast lies a beautiful Monastery. The 18th Century structure is beautifully colourful and has one of the most picturesque court yards with beautifully checked stone floor.
Note – Before entering a member of the Monastery inspect what you’re wearing. The will hand you a scarf if you’re showing too much skin. Be as respectful as you can.

4. Visit the Symi War Memorial
Pay respects at the Symi War Memorial, situated on the cliffs in the town centre. The memorial is very well maintained and unique.

5. Relax on the Agios Georgios Dysalona Beach
One of the many beaches in Symi, Agios Georgios Dysalona Beach. Cool down in the stunningly clear sea whilst you relax on the beach.
